RootsIreland offers a unique database of more than 20 million Irish records

It contains data from 34 county genealogy centres on the island of Ireland. The main sources on the site are Irish Catholic and other church records of baptisms, marriages and deaths which are the most important source for tracing Irish ancestry.

The Irish Family History Foundation has been the coordinating body for a network of county genealogy centres and family history societies for over thirty years. The sources available vary for each county so please check our Irish Online Sources for details of what is available on the website.

FGDP-NI

The Northern Ireland division was set up in 1992 and is an active division of the FGDP in the UK. Currently there are in excess of 120 members.

In keeping with the aims of the wider FGDP(UK), our goal is to improve the level of care provided to patients through standard setting, training, education and research.

We run a very successful biennial Conference in Belfast, usually in September. This regularly attracts an audience of over 150 dentists to hear internationally renowned speakers.

The Poor Man’s Picture Gallery

These astonishing stereo cards from Dr. Brian May’s collection reconstruct some well‐known Victorian paintings using real actors and staged scenes.

The stereos are contemporary with the paintings, and the connections to the works of art were hitherto unknown outside the circle of specialist collectors of Victoriana.

The photos were produced for commercial reasons — the advent of a new painting by a great artist was big news, but most people were not able to access and enjoy the new works of art. Entrepreneurial photographers of the day reconstructed the scenes, photographed them, and sold the stereo cards for profit. In addition to their beauty, they shed a light on the story of these famous paintings and reveal a great deal about the society of the time.

The format is to show the painting itself, followed by the stereo card versions of that painting with explanatory text. The artists include Landseer, Maclise, Wallis, Millais, Calderon, Lane, Frith, Nicol, Leslie, Hunt, and the photographers were the most distinguished of that time.

The book also reveals that stereo photographers drew their inspirations from illustrations — and more particularly from cartoons published in the satirical magazine Punch —, and that their work, in turn, inspired china figures known as “fairings.”

Brian May – The Red Special

Brian May and his father Harold started to hand-build an electric guitar in 1963. Brian dreamed of a guitar that would outperform any of the existing commercially made electric guitars; his father had the technical knowledge and skills to help make the dream come true. Brian played his guitar on every Queen album and in all of Queen’s live shows around the world.

In this book you will discover everything you ever wished to know about Brian’s unique instrument. Brian talks about every aspect of the Red Special, from its birth to playing on the roof of Buckingham Palace, from Live Aid to the closing ceremony of the London 2012 Olympics – and beyond. All of this is accompanied with original diagrams, sketches and notes dating from the building of the guitar, as well as a great selection of photographs including Brian on stage with his guitar, close-ups and x-rays.

NWMRT

The North West Mountain Rescue Team was established in Derry City in 1980 to provide a search and rescue service for the north west of Northern Ireland. Today the operational area has extended to include all of Northern Ireland, with the exception of the Mourne Mountains which is covered by its own team. However, as a member of Mountain Rescue Ireland (MRI), we will support any of the 10 other Mountain Rescue Teams based on the island of Ireland.

The Team provides a 24 hour call-out service at the request of the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) requiring a high level of commitment from our team members who are expected to respond in all weather conditions, 365 days of the year. In order to respond quickly, the team is organised into 3 Sections based in Enniskillen, Magherafelt and Ballymena, and known as West, Central and East Sections respectively. The nearest Section provides an immediate response until additional resources arrive from the other Sections.
