Sloan Digital Sky Survey

sdss1The Sloan Digital Sky Survey has created the most detailed three-dimensional maps of the Universe ever made, with deep multi-color images of one third of the sky, and spectra for more than three million astronomical objects. Learn and explore all phases and surveys—past, present, and future—of the SDSS.

Institute of Cosmology & Gravitation

icg2Cosmology, Galaxy Evolution & Gravitation

The ICG is a research institute at the University of Portsmouth devoted to topics in cosmology, galaxy evolution and gravitation. It has nearly 50 staff, post-docs and students working on subjects from inflation in the early Universe to understanding the stellar populations in galaxies.

The Institute is a member of many research projects

ICG staff teach on undergraduate courses in Mathematics and Physics at the University of Portsmouth.

SDSSIII

sdssIII2Building on the legacy of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and SDSS-II, the SDSS-III Collaboration is working to map the Milky Way, search for extrasolar planets, and solve the mystery of dark energy.

SDSS-III’s newest release is Data Release 9 (DR9). DR9 contains the first spectra of the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS), and improved stellar parameters from SEGUE-2.

All of DR9’s images, spectra, and measurements are available to anyone online. You can browse through sky images, look up data for individual objects, or search for objects anywhere using any criteria.

SDSS-III’s first release, Data Release 8 (DR8), is still available. DR8 contains all the images ever taken by the Sloan Foundation 2.5-m Telescope. Together, these images make up the largest color image of the sky ever made. A version of the DR8 image is shown to the right. DR8 also includes measurements for nearly 500 million stars, galaxies, and quasars, and spectra for nearly two million.

Zooniverse

The Zooniverse is home to the internet’s largest, most popular and most successful citizen science projects. Our current projects are here but plenty more are on the way. If you’re new to the Zooniverse, we suggest picking a project and diving in – the same account will get you into all of our projects, and you can keep track of what you’ve contributed by watching ‘My Zooniverse’.

Origin

The Zooniverse began with a single project, Galaxy Zoo , which was launched in July 2007. The Galaxy Zoo team had expected a fairly quiet life, but were overwhelmed and overawed by the response to the project. Once they’d recovered from their server buckling under the strain, they set about planning the future!

Galaxy Zoo was important because not only was it incredibly popular, but it produced many unique scientific results, ranging from individual, serendipitous discoveries to those using classifications that depend on the input of everyone who’s visited the site. This commitment to producing real research – so that you know that we’re not wasting your time – is at the heart of everything we do.

Real Science Online

The Zooniverse and the suite of projects it contains is produced, maintained and developed by the Citizen Science Alliance. The member institutions of the CSA work with many academic and other partners around the world to produce projects that use the efforts and ability of volunteers to help scientists and researchers deal with the flood of data that confronts them.

Bang Universe

Our book, modestly entitled “BANG! – The Complete History of the Universe” is now available, and this site is intended to build a companion community for those interested in matters relating to the book.

We all, Patrick Moore, Chris Lintott and myself, plus the whole BANG! team, hope that the interactive nature of BangUniverse.com will stimulate constructive discussion of the astronomical topics raised in the book. In addition we will be open to suggestions to do with improvements that might be made to the site as time goes on. We will welcome constructive questions, suggestions and criticisms, and one of our first projects, as the site grows, will be to construct a Questions & Answers feature to enable quick answers to be found for the queries most often raised.

For me personally, the writing and researching of BANG! have been a wonderful voyage of discovery; I feel hugely privileged to have been able to spend time with Sir Patrick and Chris over the last two and a half years, and take part in the creation of something which we all hope will inform, and excite, and entertain, and provide a new generation of potential astronomers with inspiration. We stress: BANG! is written in ENGLISH, rather than the language of mathematics, designed to be clear to anyone not previously deeply immersed in Astronomy, but with an appetite for understanding; if there are sections in BANG! which are hard to follow, we would like to know about it, so we can make improvements, when the book is (hopefully!) prepared for its first reprint.
